Breeders' Cup Classic

Horse of the Year honors are often influenced by the outcome of this race. This year older handicap horse Lemon Drop Kid and three-year-old sensation Fusaichi Pegasus had the most to win (or lose) based on their performances in the dusk of Churchill Downs. Neither horse wound up being a factor in the outcome. Fu Peg got into trouble on the first turn and never was a factor. Lemon Drop Kid raced well but came up empty in the stretch.

Tiznow best Giant's Causeway in the Classic

Three-year-olds Albert the Great and Tiznow battled for the lead till the final turn. When Albert the Great gave way European Giant's Causeway took up the chase. In a battle that lasted the length of the stretch Tiznow would prevail by a neck over Giant's Causeway. There was talk of a weak three-year-old crop this year but  they swept the first four places in this prestigious race.

Tiznow prepares to enter the winner's circle

When New England born and bred Chris McCarron started the day he was riding the lock of the day Riboletta. She beat just two horses. Then riding Tiznow, a horse that was a maiden just six months ago, he won one of the richest races of the year. The uncertainties of the game add to the excitement and keep the faithful coming back. On the Tuesday after the race Cecilia Straub-Rubens co-owner  of Tiznow died of cancer at 83. Michael Cooper her partner  in Tiznow was reported as saying " Those two minutes it took Tiznow to run that  race were the best she had felt in a long time. I think it was Tiznow that kept her going. She went out in style, a true winner."
