A few names always emerge when the best of the sport
gather. One would hardly expect to make it through a Breeders' Cup without
hearing from either jockey Jerry Bailey and trainer D. Wayne Lukas. With
Bailey's 14th Breeders' Cup win on Orientate in The Sprint he moved one
ahead of Pat Day in the races won department. For trainer D. Wayne it was
his 17th win, an incredible number considering his closest competitor Shug
McGaughey won his 8th with Storm Flag Flying earlier in the day. Of
note to New England racing fans was the first Breeders Cup start for
jockey Harry Vega. Harry rode in New England for many years.
Jerry Bailey & Orientate go to post
Orientate justified her post time favorite status with an exciting
late charge to catch 48 to 1 long shot Thunderello in the final twenty
yards of the race in a swift 1:08.89, giving owners Bob & Beverly
Lewis their first Breeders' Cup victory. Xtra Heat managed to stay with
the front runners to the top of the stretch but faded to sixth. Congratulations
to Harry Vega for achieving the plateau of riding in the Breeders' Cup.
