The Excelsior was billed as a meeting between old friends Evening Attire and Funny Cide. The Kentucky Derby winner raced well on the lead and after being headed in the stretch ran gamely, but could not compete with the Todd Pletcher trained West Virginia. Evening Attire was never a factor.
